Vimy Commemorative Events

On the evening of Saturday, April 8, 2017, Fort Rodd Hill hosted a special evening event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.  Starting in the early evening, there was music provided by the 5th Field Regiment, RCA Band, stories by historians and local military re-enactors, official speeches, including a tribute to Victoria's own General Sir Arthur Currie...

...various fun commemorative crafts and other activities...

Volunteers were recruited from the crowd to participate in a demonstration of Trench warfare training.

The evening culminated in a spectacular 100-round barrage timed to coincide with the 5:30 am (France time) start of the famous battle 100 years ago.

Sunday saw another full day of commemorating at the Bay Street Armoury.  Various military bands played martial music and other favorites throughout the whole day....

There were many displays by different organizations...

Including our own humble efforts...

All in all it was a great weekend of commemorating and remembering the contributions of Canada to the Great War effort.
